The Measured Dog Mechanism

Effect over time: fresher breath inside ten days, visibly cleaner teeth by month three
Based on 105 customer surveys*

One effect you smell in ten days. One you see on the tooth in ninety

Every dental powder in this aisle promises the same thing - sprinkle it on his food, skip the brushing - and treats breath and tartar as one job.

Measured Dog doses them separately.

They are two jobs on two different clocks. Breath comes from the mouth and it moves quickly; tartar is already on the tooth and it does not. The formula on the label is called Dental Algae™ - three marine algae and two ground herbs, and nothing else but the palatant - and every ingredient in it is measured to do one job or the other. So 27% of every measure is given over to breath alone, and 40% to the ingredient that works on the tooth - and the dose follows the dog, one level measure per 22 lb of him, printed on the label instead of hidden in a tub size.

Stage one · the first 10 days

Breath: the two ground herbs

Breath, and it has its own ingredients.

Most of this category treats breath as a side effect of cleaner teeth, and gives it nothing of its own. That's why we combine Ground Thyme and Ground Sage - 27% of every measure, working on the mouth rather than on the tooth. This is the part of the formula that moves inside the first 10 days.

Ground Thyme 20% • Ground Sage 7%
Stage two · by day 90

Tartar: the three marine algae

Tartar, and that one takes months.

Fresher breath is not a clean tooth. That's why 40% of every measure is Ascophyllum nodosum - the one ingredient in this category with published, placebo-controlled work behind it, alongside Spirulina and Chlorella. It works on what is already on the tooth, so it is slow by nature, with the difference typically visible around day 90.

Ascophyllum 40% • Spirulina 27% • Chlorella 3%

Dental powders are dosed by the tub. We dose by the dog.

A 12 lb dog and an 80 lb dog get the same scoop out of the same tub, and the label calls both of them a serving. The amount of active your dog actually gets depends on which tub was picked up off the shelf, not on the dog standing in the kitchen.

Anyone can add a popular ingredient to a label. Very few brands tell you how much is actually inside.

At Measured Dog, every active ingredient is included at a precisely measured dose and disclosed on the label, never hidden inside proprietary blends. Because research isn't just about what works. It's about how much of each ingredient delivers noticeable results.

The amounts below represent the full daily serving for a 90 lbs dog. Smaller dogs receive proportionally adjusted servings based on body weight, ensuring every dog receives the right amount of each active ingredient.

Ascophyllum nodosum · Norwegian sea kelp

The ingredient the published, placebo-controlled work in this category was done on - and the largest part of this formula by mass. It works on what is already on the tooth, which is why the honest timeline for it is months, not days.

A second marine algae, and the reason this is not a single-ingredient powder. Its stated job on the label is supporting the health of the mouth itself, alongside what the kelp does to the tooth.

„My dog has never had great teeth and he’s not really a chewer either so keeping them clean has always been a struggle. We’re about halfway through our second month using Measured Dog Dental and I’m actually starting to see a difference. His gums used to look pretty red and now they’re much more pink and healthy looking. I think there’s less tartar too, not all gone or anything, but definitely better than before. He’s also super picky with food so I was worried he wouldn’t eat it with the powder on there but he doesn’t seem to care at all. It wasn’t something I noticed overnight, it took a while. But so far I’m happy with it and we’re going to keep using it and see how his teeth look in another couple months."

„I have a Rat Terrier and a Beagle and neither one is letting me brush their teeth lol. I took one of them to the vet and they told me it would be almost $5,000 for a dental cleaning 😳 yeah... I have not won the lottery yet. So I tried Measured Dog Dental. Started with a scoop on their food with a little water every day. Both of them REALLY needed it, their teeth were pretty brown. It’s not cheap so now I only give it a couple days a week but I can still tell it’s helping. Their teeth just look better than they did before. For what the vet wanted to charge me I’m definitely happy I tried this first."

„We adopted a little senior dog when he was 14 and honestly he came with a few issues. His breath was BAD, he snored like crazy and car rides were rough because he would whine, get worked up and sometimes burp up this awful stomach smell. We started using Measured Dog Dental and I really wasn’t expecting a huge difference. After the first month we noticed he wasn’t snoring nearly as much and he seemed way calmer in the car. No more weird reflux/burping either. His coat has actually been looking better too, which I wasn’t expecting. We’re getting close to 3 months now and his breath is SO much better. He still has some tartar on his back teeth, so it’s definitely not like his teeth magically became perfect, but I’m honestly really happy with how much has changed. For a 14 year old little guy, I’ll take it."

„I honestly can’t believe how well this stuff works. I figured I’d maybe see a little difference but both my dogs teeth are SO much whiter now. Like puppy teeth again lol. And it’s ridiculously easy, I just add it to their food and that’s it. Really glad I decided to try Measured Dog Dental. Now I’m just wondering... do they make this for humans too?? 😂 Low key not even joking."

Why this is a powder and not another dental chew

When we developed Measured Dog, we had a choice. We could make another soft chew like everyone else, or we could choose the format that allowed us to build the best formula possible.

We chose the formula.

Unlike soft chews, a powder doesn't require extra ingredients to create its texture or consistency. That means we can dedicate 97.0% of the formula to active ingredients, the ingredients that actually do the work.

97.0% Active Ingredients

The less space we dedicate to manufacturing ingredients, the more space we have for ingredients that matter. It's a simple decision, but one that makes a big difference in the quality of the final formula.

Dental Algae™ Formula

Three marine algae and two ground herbs: Ascophyllum nodosum, Spirulina, Chlorella, Ground Thyme and Ground Sage. Every one of them earns its place - if an ingredient doesn't work on his breath or on his teeth, it isn't in here. Nothing is added to hold a chew together or improve its texture, because there is no chew to hold together.

97% Acceptance Rate

None of this matters if your dog won't eat it. Over a four-week test on wet food the dogs were already used to, 97% of them accepted the formula. The palatant doing that work is hydrolysed duck liver - 3% of every measure, and the only part of it that is not an active ingredient.

Compare what actually matters

Most dental products make the same promise.

The real difference isn't what's written on the front of the label.

It's how the formula is built.

Measured Results™

Every claim we make should be measurable.

Breath and tartar are not the same job and they do not arrive together. Pretending otherwise is how a dental powder loses people in week three. This is the order things actually happen in.

1–2days

Why veterinarians recommend it

Dr. Anna Smith, DVM
„In this category the amount of active a dog gets usually depends on which tub was bought rather than on the dog. Dosing by body weight is a small change that makes a large difference at both ends of the range."

Dr. Marcus Hale, DVM
„Breath and tartar are two different problems on two different timescales. A formula that gives breath its own ingredients, instead of treating it as a by-product of cleaner teeth, is far easier to explain to an owner."

Dr. Priya Raman, DVM, MS
„Nothing sprinkled on food replaces brushing, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. What a powder can do is reduce what accumulates between cleanings, and for most of the dogs I see that is the realistic goal."

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the dental chews I already buy?
A dental chew is mostly something to bite. The mechanical part is real but it stops at the surfaces he happens to chew on, and the chew itself carries calories. This is a powder that goes on his food, so it reaches the whole mouth, and 97.0% of every measure is the active part. The label prints what is in it as a share of the measure, not as a tub size.
How much do I give him?
One level measure per 22 lb (10 kg) of body weight, once a day, on his food. In whole measures that is: under 25 lb one, 25 to 44 lb two, 45 to 64 lb three, 65 lb and over four. One measure size and whole measures only - nothing to weigh out at the bowl, and nothing that depends on which tub you happened to buy.
How quickly will I see something?
Breath first. 27% of every measure is thyme and sage, and they work on the mouth rather than on the tooth, so nothing has to build up first - most owners notice his breath inside ten days. Tartar is the other job and it runs on its own clock: it is already on the tooth, and the honest timeline for it is months. That is why both stages are printed instead of one number that flatters the product.
Why powder and not a chew?
Because a chew has to hold its shape, and holding a shape takes glycerin, binders and oils - which is how a dental product ends up 20 to 30% active. Here it is 97.0%. And a hard chew needs a dog who can chew: the dog you buy a dental product for is often exactly the dog whose mouth already hurts.
My dog is a picky eater. Will he eat it?
It is designed to be mixed straight into his food, and the formula carries hydrolysed duck liver as a palatant - the 135 mg in a three-measure serving that is not an active ingredient, and the reason a dog eats a spoonful of kelp and herbs without arguing about it. In a four-week test on wet food, 97% of dogs accepted it.
Can I give it with his usual food and other supplements?
Yes, and it is meant to go on food. If he is on medication, ask your vet first and tell them the formula is 40% Ascophyllum nodosum - Norwegian sea kelp - which carries naturally occurring iodine.
Is it safe for a puppy?
Ask your vet for a dog under 12 weeks. Beyond that the dose follows body weight like it does for an adult, and it changes as he grows - update his weight in your account and the next delivery is right.
He has a thyroid condition. Can he have it?
Ask your vet before the first measure, not after, and give them this number: one measure carries about 360 µg of naturally occurring iodine from the kelp, so a dog on four measures a day is getting roughly 1,440 µg. For a 22 lb dog, on one measure, that is already close to a full day's iodine requirement. That is fine for most dogs and it is exactly the thing worth checking for a dog on thyroid medication - a short question with a clear answer, and one for the person treating him rather than for a product page.
How long does a jar last?
A 90 g jar holds 60 level measures. At one measure a day that is 60 days, at two 30, at three 20, at four 15. That is why the plan ships by his size instead of a flat monthly box.
Does he need to chew it for it to work?
No. That is the point of a powder. It mixes into his food and reaches the mouth on the way through, including the back teeth he never chews properly and the gum line a chew never touches. Nothing about it depends on him gnawing at the right angle for long enough.
